In 2017, conservation charity Buglife announced that the River Waveney, located on the Norfolk and Suffolk border, was one of the most polluted rivers in Britain. The river has been contaminated by neonicotinoids, a chemical pollutant originating from agricultural activities, more specifically the harvest of sugar beet.
Today, the water of the River Waveney is both beneficial to the local economy yet destructive to the ecosystem. Ruined River explores the tensions that can be found between water and land, as well as exploring the pollution that can be found both above and below the water.
